Frames for Sustainability Standards

The three tools on this page can help to explain and communicate the value of sustainability standards consistently and effectively. They are based on research and interviews, and validated through workshops with practitioners and representatives of civil society and international organizations.

  1. Theory of Change. We introduce the basic framework – the underlying reality – of the story that the sustainability standards community is trying to tell.
  2. Values, Metaphors and Vocabularies. We explore the underlying values of sustainability standards and explore how to convey them in ways which build on people’s existing ideas and create confidence and support.
  3. Sample Narrative. Applying the metaphors and vocabularies, we show how the narrative can be translated into more accessible language, and yet remain true and convincing.
